Multi-generations reside in the workforce and managing the different generations can be challenging.  How does a manager bring together different work perspectives so that each generation understands and respects the needs of others?   How many different generations are now working together?

Silent Generation – before 1945 and they are in their 70s and 80s and are still working.   Not all because of finances, as people are living longer and still have something to contribute to a company.  They had a strong work ethic and given it was during the time of McCarthy Era; many felt it was dangerous to speak out.   It’s not uncommon for them to have judgments around the younger generations as being entitled.

Tips for Managing Baby Boomer Workforce

Today’s workforce has several different generations working side-by-side and each is motivated by different needs.  All employees want to have interesting work and be respected for what they bring to the mix.  Baby Boomers want to be respected for their experience.

So how do you manage a baby boomer vs a generation x or y?   “Are You Old Enough to Know Better?”  on Managing People at Work site.

“Managing older employees starts with the manager himself,” says Maxine Fischer, AARP operations manager in Southern California. “It’s natural to feel a bit defensive when dealing with someone who has more experience in the workplace,” Fischer notes. “On the other hand, there’s a tremendous amount you can learn that will improve your managerial style and the strength of your team.”

Finding the right talent to fill your business demands will be more and more challenging.    Before companies were happy to retire their old workers because the younger generation was plentiful.   That’s not the case anymore.  Now there are several generations residing in a workplace and their needs are different.

The Baby Boomers are still an integral part of the workplace, and companies want to keep their senior employees, yet their needs are now different.   In managing employees, you need to be creative to retain several different generations and still meet your business needs.   Boomers, whether they have to or want to work, will look for more flexibility as they are no longer building a career.

Young Manager, Older Worker

There are several strong actions a younger or new manager can incorporate when managing older, more experienced workers.   It doesn’t have to be a struggle, rather a place for mutual respect for both generations.

Over the next few months I labored to learn the best way to manage people with more experience and knowledge than I had.  Luckily, learning how to do this was not rocket science, it just involved incorporating a few simple rules that not only created a better working environment but led to consistent results.
