  • Work that is challenging
  • Transparent communication around what is happening in the company
  • Treat them with respect in your interactions
  • Be a strong manager, who is willing to lead, tell the truth and find solutions to their work issues

Partnering with Your Peers

By pat, No Comments

Employees watch their managers to see how they problem solve, treat others and work with their peers.    Your staff will know immediately if you are having difficulty with other managers.   How do you build strong relationships with your peers…other managers.

You can’t control the behaviors of your peers, though you can think of creative ways to respond so that you are respectful to all members involved.   One of the most important skills a manager can learn in business as well as personal, is listening.  Everyone wants to be heard, even if you don’t agree with them.  Conflicts happen when people work together, though how you handle the situation makes all of the difference in maintaining a strong working relationship.   Take the time to see both sides of the issue, be clear around how you see the situation and share that information in a respective manager, and come to the table looking for a mutual solution.

Studies show that employees that communicate and connect with each other during the business day increase productivity and helps with retention.   Employees need roots in the company in order to feel a part of the organization and their relationships within the workplace help with their overall happiness at work.  Some ways these employees connect:

  • brainstorming
  • over lunch
  • on Monday sharing the weekend with each other
  • water cooler is the typical image of employees gathering

They share their personal lives, work issues as well as gossip.     Gossip is the one area you will want to help educate each employee of its potential destructive quality.

A post by Valentine Belonwu on BusinessGross.com “Managing Employees – How to Build and Nurture a Productive Business” provides 3 principles to managing employees:

Are Your Employees Engaged?

By pat, No Comments

In managing employees “engagement” is important to the success of the company.  Even though the term is being bounced around freely, the truth is it’s a powerful way to manage teams.  What does “engagement” mean?    Employees that are fully present to the success of the company produce results.  Managers can keep the employees busy, though it doesn’t mean they are engaged.  So how do you get an employee fully present?

For an employee to be engaged, they need to be part of the decision making process.   Yes, initially it is absorbs alot of your time, though when a manager embraces employees’ contributions in the decision making process, they are more involved and hence more invested in the results.
