What Makes a Respectful Workplace

You may have heard of the expression “respectful workplace.” A workplace that values its employee has an advantage in growing their business. What does a respectful workplace look like?

Ask yourself:  How are you treated as a manager?    Do you feel that you are important to your manager, recognized for your work and respected for your feelings and thoughts?

Ask your employees:  What does respect mean to them?

Key ingredients of a Respectful Workplace

  • Speak – it’s important to insure communication with employees is clear and open to dialogue.  Encourage people to share their feelings and thoughts about issues and projects.  Consider what you say and its impact on others.

What is Your Management Style?

Whether you are a new manager or one who has worked with employees for a long time, you still need to step back and view your management style.  How would you evaluate your style?

First, what types of management styles are there?

Autocratic
Manages by control over most aspects of the work and give little autonomy to the employees.  The manager decides without input from team members.  Without the employees buy in, the manager has to work hard to keep them focused and productive.

Have You Maximize Your Employee’s Strengths

Maximizing an employee’s strengths is a more effective use of your time than improving their weaknesses.  No one person is perfect — how do you gain the most from your employees so they want to perform at their best?

Focus on their strengths 

As manager, your role is to provide clear expectations and coach your team so they are successful in their roles.  Employees want to contribute and are more focused and engaged when they continue to build on their strengths.

Managing Employee Expectations

Managing employees takes skill and knowledge on how best to build a team that is productive.  A manager needs to have in their toolbox areas of strength that help them direct, encourage, coach and support their direct reports.  Obviously, a toolbox has many tools in it depending on what you want to do.   So what tool is most important in managing employees?

The foundation of managing employees is providing clear expectations.

Strong and appropriate communication is an important skill for a manager.   How you communicate to your employees will either motivate or demotivate them.    Yes, you are human and don’t always communicate with clarity, though if you disrespect an employee, they will start to lose motivation.  Found this simple, though clear post on how to not speak to your employees:

Lindsay Broder on Entrepreneur.com wrote “7 Things You Should Never Say to Your Employees.”   If you are frustrated with an employee, it’s tempting to strike out and put them in their place.   That never works because they will defend themselves and usually it is by decreasing productivity.  They will also lose respect for your management style.
