How To Keep Your Top Performers

By pat, No Comments

Can you afford to lose your top performers?  The market today is different and strong talent, especially technology employees, can easily find another company to entice them away.  What do you need to keep your employees fully engaged and not tempted to leave?

You need to be consistently recruiting your current employees!

Listen
Employees want to be heard and a manager who is skilled in listening to each person will increase their ability to keep their best employees.  Here are some thoughts on how to connect with each person.

  • Do you discuss with each employee what is working and not working for them?

What Makes a Respectful Workplace

By pat, No Comments

You may have heard of the expression “respectful workplace.” A workplace that values its employee has an advantage in growing their business. What does a respectful workplace look like?

Ask yourself:  How are you treated as a manager?    Do you feel that you are important to your manager, recognized for your work and respected for your feelings and thoughts?

Ask your employees:  What does respect mean to them?

Key ingredients of a Respectful Workplace

  • Speak – it’s important to insure communication with employees is clear and open to dialogue.  Encourage people to share their feelings and thoughts about issues and projects.  Consider what you say and its impact on others.

What Does Your Employee Need From Work?

Do you know what motives each person on your team?   Employees overlap in some basic areas around what keeps them coming back each day, though each person has their own specific reasons for working and specifically at your company.   If you want to motivate your employees, find out why they come to work.

On About.com read “What People Want From Work:  Motivation” which states that money is one key factor, but what else motives each person to show up each day:

Managing Employees Salary Expectations

By pat, No Comments

It’s an unusual employee that is happy with the salary they are earning.   Most employees look for more, just as companies look for more revenue.    How do you handle the employee’s expectations around salary and still manage the finances of the company?

Expectations are based on communication.  If employees expect a raise once a year, and if this year cash is tighter than usual, communicate before the normal review period so employees know what to expect.

Employees talk to each other about salaries, even if you have a confidentiality policy, so you need to be prepared for any disparity in salary for individuals doing similar roles.

Do You Share The Glory?

By pat, No Comments

Managers are use to being in charge, directing meetings, telling employees what needs to be done, that it may be difficult to let go of the reigns and share the stage with one of your employees.   I find this post sums up nicely when you should let go.

“Bosses: When You Should — and Shouldn’t — Speak” by Jeff Haden on Inc.com.

If you’re the kind of boss who automatically takes the lead–whatever the issue at hand–you need to read this.
