Do You Celebrate the Small Stuff?

By pat, No Comments

Think small when you think of quality with your employees.  Why small?   Because whenever you celebrate the “small stuff” with your employees, you are depositing good will into their emotional account.  Steven Covey coined the phase “emotional bank account” in order to build stronger relationships.   The more you deposit into the account, the more the employees respond and are more productive.  If you make a mistake with your team, since you have made deposits into your relationship with them, they don’t over react and instead respect that you are human.

Recognize Employee’s Successes

If you want employees to perform at a higher level, then take the time to recognize all of their successes.  If your company doesn’t have a program in place, create one for your department and add a small budget to it.   Recognizing employee’s successes is critical to “your success” as a manager.

Over the years I have sat down with many managers and the conversation was usually around performance issues.   I’ve been cornered by managers because they were so frustrated with an employee.  It was my role as the HR partner to work with managers to find solutions to improve performance levels or help them with termination.

CEO Interview on Managing Employees

By pat, No Comments

I find it’s helpful to read or listen to interviews of successful business people.    If they are talking about managing employees, they have a standard they embrace that helps them maximize the performance of their teams.

“When You Write a Report Card, Explain the Grades” and interview with Laura Yecies, CEO of Sugar Synch was conducted by Adam Bryant on the New York Times.

As you manage and work with more people, you tend to see patterns and get used to different work styles. With more experience, you can more quickly notice when someone is struggling and what they need help with. Do they need more structure? Do they need more help with planning projects? Is it just that they have trouble getting started? I’ve seen that a lot.

Is Employee Turnover a Problem?

By pat, No Comments

Are your employees leaving sooner than you anticipated?   All companies need to have an employee retention program in place to lessen the turnover.  Yet, turnover will happen, especially in customer service and sales.  These positions deal with customers all day and the impact on their morale can be challenging.  It all depends on how you manage your team.

Employee turnover impacts customer experience and I thought the following article provides 3 clear points to guide you with your customer service team:   “Customer Experience is Key to Fixing Employee Turnover,” by Flavio Martins on Business2Community website.

Managing employees takes skill as well as a genuine respect for each individual on your team and what they offer to the success of your department.   Where do you stand as a Great Manager?

How Do You Manage People Who Are Clearly Smarter Than You, Without Them Thinking You’re An Idiot? by Tom Yuin, Forbes.com

When I was 23, I was managed by a guy in his late 20s who I still consider even now to be the best boss I ever had.
