First Interview With a Candidate

By admin, No Comments

It’s good to have an agenda for the first interview that sets the foundation of the interviewing process. For many companies, the internal recruiter will be the one to start interviewing candidates. It’s important to set the tone for the ongoing relationship with the candidate. Here is a potential format for the first interview:

Reach out to candidate indicating you want to set up a ½ hour phone conversation to discuss the company, the role, and their experience:

  • Email them with a subject line that pertains to the position they applied to.

Importance of Benefits in Recruiting

By pat, No Comments

Most companies offer some level of benefits to stay competitive in the market for new hires. Potential candidates expect to receive benefits in addition to their salary compensation. It’s part of the total package being offered to the potential new hire. Here is a list of benefits that could be offered:

  • Health Insurance
    • Medical, dental and vision
    • It’s always depends on a company’s budget what they are able to spend on benefits.   Some variations of coverage could be:
      • 100% of employee coverage to 50% of employee coverage on medical.  Family portion of the coverage could be 50% or the employee picks up spouse/family portion.    Dental & vision could be the same or the employee absorbs the full cost of them.    The medical coverage, of course, is the most expensive of the coverages.

Before You Start Recruiting

To effectively recruit, it’s helpful to step back and analyze who you are as a recruiter or hiring manager. Taking the time to understand what you bring to the recruiting process can be productive or counterproductive in finding the best talent. Think about your past recruiting style.

  • What did you do to get ready for the recruiting process?
  • How did you source for candidates?
  • How did you select the candidates to interview?
  • Review how much time you spoke vs. the time the candidate spoke in the interview.
  • What questions did you have ready for the candidates?

Ownership of the Recruiting Process

You, the manager, always own the whole recruiting process, though you can delegate areas of the recruiting to others, either in the initial screening or during the interview itself. Why is important that you own it?

  • This person is going to work on your team.
  • They will help you meet business deliverables.
  • Your success is dependent on their performance.

Internal and External Recruiters

Both internal and external recruiters work with the manager to insure that the best talent is sourced and presented. They do the advertising for the position, initial screening of resumes and also first interview with the candidates.
