How To Retain Good Employees

By pat, No Comments

When managing employees, you need to know why each employee may want to leave the company.    You can’t control external circumstances in an employee’s life as that is outside of your sphere.   Creating a work environment that encourages communication will help retain good employees.

Employees leave a company for many reasons:

  • Relationship with their manager:   This is one of the top reasons employees leave a company.   Review your relationship with your team members.   Do they respect you or fear you or believe you don’t stand behind your words?
  • Is the work challenging enough to hold their attention?

Managing Employees Salary Expectations

By pat, No Comments

It’s an unusual employee that is happy with the salary they are earning.   Most employees look for more, just as companies look for more revenue.    How do you handle the employee’s expectations around salary and still manage the finances of the company?

Expectations are based on communication.  If employees expect a raise once a year, and if this year cash is tighter than usual, communicate before the normal review period so employees know what to expect.

Employees talk to each other about salaries, even if you have a confidentiality policy, so you need to be prepared for any disparity in salary for individuals doing similar roles.

Family Friendly Workplace

The majority of people in the US are women, as well as approximately 60% of women are in the workplace with children under 3 years old.  How does your company handle women who are caretakers?   Is your company family-friendly or is it considered an imposition to have employees who are also caretakers?

If you are managing an employee (both male/female) who has family obligations, are you flexible with them and help them balance their personal and business lives?

Talent is hard to find so if you have an employee who needs flexibility, you can create loyalty as well as lessen the employee’s stress levels if you find solutions that work for both of you.

Keeping Your High Performers

Managers know they require a good team to meet their business deliverables.    What can a manager do to keep their talent?

It starts at the recruiting stage by creating a clear job description so you know the qualifications of the right candidates, otherwise you will hire on whether you like the person or not.   Of course liking a candidate is important, but as a criteria for hiring, you may not find the talent that performs at a high level.

After you bring the person aboard, integrating the employee into your company and providing the training necessary for them to succeed in their role.

Do You Share The Glory?

Managers are use to being in charge, directing meetings, telling employees what needs to be done, that it may be difficult to let go of the reigns and share the stage with one of your employees.   I find this post sums up nicely when you should let go.

“Bosses: When You Should — and Shouldn’t — Speak” by Jeff Haden on Inc.com.

If you’re the kind of boss who automatically takes the lead–whatever the issue at hand–you need to read this.
