Managing virtual employees requires the same skills as face-to-face management.   The one area that you need to enhance is communication as this is the foundational skill for managers.   Providing employees with information in a timely way allows them to contribute effectively.  Virtual employees lose alot of connections working separately from the  rest of the team and use whatever resources you have to build clarity and direction for your team.

Managing employees has a lot to do with trust.  If you don’t trust people will do their best, then work-at-home is not a good solution for you.   Working at home is a great perk to offer employees…for the right employee.

Studies show that employees who sit in the office are using company time for personal use.   So whether an employee works at home or at the office you still have to be clear around expectations and deliverables.   There is a comfort zone for managers when they see employees as they feel that the employee thinks they are watching.

Technology provides flexibility for employees to work at home and this is a benefit for managers as well.  Businesses can now search for talent across state and country borders, especially in the technology area.  Besides the company and compensation, working at home is an attractive perk to candidates.

So how do you manage, encourage, motivate, communicate to virtual employees?    You do have to set up strong communication systems to insure that the employee is part of the team.  Use technology to have weekly meetings as well as team building events.

Managing virtual employees has a different set of challenges.  Virtual employees need to be communicated more often than onsite employees…they are isolated and are not included into the daily culture of the company.    That’s where technology can help you manage the virtual employee so their performance is consistent and they feel part of the company.

Amex OPEN Forum showcased in a post by Rae Hoffman-Dolan “6 Must Have Tools for Managing Virtual Employee.”  This article offers recommendations on different online software:  communication, file storage, project management and calendar.   These are not expensive tools and are readily available to all employees.
