Stress is a major cause of absenteeism though not the only one. Take the time to evaluate the employees that take time off, how often, what days and check in with them to see what the issues are regarding their absenteeism. Maybe the employee has a personal issue that is temporarily impacting their performance. In taking the time to find out what is causing the issue, you may be able to tailor a solution that works for you and the employee.
Maybe you have to set a clearer policy and let employees know that you will check in with them around all absenteeism.
