Is Absenteeism a Problem?
Does absenteeism plague your department? Chronic absenteeism is indicative of a problem and needs to be address. Is it just one employee or do you find that Mondays and Fridays you are short staffed? Check out the following and see where you can problem solve this issue:
“Five Tips for Managing Employee Absenteeism” by Kimberly Mashburn-Lee on Pacific Resources. She provides a simple review of the potential solutions to help you reduce productivity issues.
Stress is a major cause of absenteeism though not the only one. Take the time to evaluate the employees that take time off, how often, what days and check in with them to see what the issues are regarding their absenteeism. Maybe the employee has a personal issue that is temporarily impacting their performance. In taking the time to find out what is causing the issue, you may be able to tailor a solution that works for you and the employee.
Maybe you have to set a clearer policy and let employees know that you will check in with them around all absenteeism. This way they know you are keeping them accountable and you have the opportunity to find out more about them and their issues. Of course, sometimes they are really sick…and that is simple.
Be well,
