Managing People Through Change
There’s lots of different information out on the internet around helping employees through change. Change is all around us, yet in many ways there are elements of the same in the change. That is true with managing employees. Commonsense is a key ingredient in helping your employees deal with change in their roles or the company. In managing employees you are required to balance the needs of the business with that of each member of your team. So how do you do that…communication.
Communication is key to your success. Here are some considerations in helping your team members through change:
“Seven Steps to Managing People Through Change” by Andy Gilbert on the website GoMadThinking.com. When you read the 7 different steps you will recognize the many roles you play as a manager.
In handling change with your team members, it starts with understanding your reactions to the change. Before you can lead another, you need to acknowledge your own journey through the changes. Change is inevitable as nothing stays the same. We have the false sense of security when we believe we can keep everything the same. Because of the nature of humans (or so it seems), we grativate towards “the same,” and change scares us.
As a manager, your role is to handle your own fears around change and help your employees move through the change to the other side.
Empathy and communication are great tools in moving your employees through change.
Be well,
Pat
