Tips for Managing Baby Boomer Workforce
Today’s workforce has several different generations working side-by-side and each is motivated by different needs. All employees want to have interesting work and be respected for what they bring to the mix. Baby Boomers want to be respected for their experience.
So how do you manage a baby boomer vs a generation x or y? “Are You Old Enough to Know Better?” on Managing People at Work site.
“Managing older employees starts with the manager himself,” says Maxine Fischer, AARP operations manager in Southern California. “It’s natural to feel a bit defensive when dealing with someone who has more experience in the workplace,” Fischer notes. “On the other hand, there’s a tremendous amount you can learn that will improve your managerial style and the strength of your team.”
When managing older employees who have longevity in the workplace and it’s important to recognize that they still want and can continue to contribute to the business. Managers need all generations to meet the demands of their business. Remember that “respect” for the individual is the most important attitude you can give to your employees…no matter what their generation.
